From the Word: Worried? Don’t be!(from Matthew 6:22-34)
”And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life?” (Matthew 6:27 NASB)
Lord, this is just common sense! How could I ever increase my height by worrying, or lengthen my time through worry? Yet worry is such a basic part of human nature. I worry about things I have no control over - decisions other people make and things that other people do. I have absolutely no control over how other people drive while I’m on the road; I’m at the mercy of their good or poor judgment. But rather than addressing issues like that, You bring it home and make it very personal to me: food, clothing, drink, length of days. There are good common sense things I can do in those areas: eat right, dress well, a good night’s sleep, etc., but in reality there are aspects of those things which I can’t control, and that is what You are speaking to. Yet because You care about me I can trust You! I can look to You for our needs, and see what happens. Help me to grow in the wisdom about these life issues that leads to common sense faith in You. Amen.
Please pray with us:
As a couple we have recently started pre-marital counselling with Nick and Dana, a newly engaged couple in our young professionals group. It has been both fun and challenging for us as we have reviewed in our own marriage the things we are talking about with them. Please pray with us that the things we go over with them will be:
- the essentials that they will need not just to survive in their marriage but to enter into a strong, growing life partnership that will be fulfilling for them and useful for the advancement of God’s Kingdom,
- helpful reminders for us as we review our commitment to Christ and to one another (we celebrate our 25th next month) and as we are reminded about things that by familiarity or habit we have begun to take for granted or let slip.
Thanks!
John
