From the Word: “Hear His voice” (from Psalm 95)
”Today, if you would hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as at Meribah, as in the days of Massah in the wilderness.” (Psalm 95:7b-8 NASB)
Well, Lord, this is exactly what I want every day, to hear Your voice! But there is an ‘if’ here: if I would hear Your voice… What would prevent me from hearing Your voice? One is You not speaking. But You have spoken (Heb 1:1-2). The more I grow in my knowledge of You, the more I ‘hear’, because You have spoken by Your Incarnation. O to know You better, Lord Jesus! And what would cause me to harden my heart? What would be an incentive for me to do that?
Lord, protect me from hardening my heart and grasping for things in the world, empty promises that will never fulfill, that will grow stale and always leave me unsatisfied, still looking for more. In Exodus 17 the people quarreled with Moses and therefore with You, Lord, because they didn’t have what they thought they needed. May I not grumble and quarrel with You, Lord, but trust You to provide every day for us according to Your riches and Your plans for us. It may be manna that You provide, but whatever it is, may I be grateful for Your provision and seek to be faithful, applying myself to the tasks and opportunities You set before me. Amen.
Please pray with us this week:
This Sunday we are taking a day trip to New York City with some friends in our 20something group. We will be going to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, checking out the Christmas decorations in the store windows on 5th Avenue, and also attending a service at Times Square Church. Road trips provide a good opportunity to interact over a variety of topics in an informal setting. Please pray for our time together that, as our conversation turns to issues of faith and life, we could communicate at a heart level about practical aspects of living out our faith and influencing others for the sake of the gospel. Thanks.
