From the Word: Always seek good (from I Thessalonians 5:12-28)
”See that no one repays another with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good for one another and for all people.” (I Thessalonians 5:15 NASB)
Lord, may I always consciously, intentionally seek after that which benefits others. How selfish I naturally tend to be! Will I ever get beyond myself and my own concerns, or is this why I need to spend time with You daily, to be reminded regularly that there is a lot more to be concerned with than my petty interests? So long as I can turn on the tap and get clean water, open the frig and get healthy, tasty food, relax on the sofa in air-conditioned or heated comfort, and even choose what to do today that is hard: pushups, leg therapy, cycling, lawn and yard work, etc., then I tend to forget about the desperate needs of others, needs typified by the Syrophoenician woman, by Bartimaeus, by so many whom You served, by those who are struggling in their marriage, by those whose kids are being overly influenced by a culture promoting self-pursuits, pleasure, materialism, situational ethics and lack of personal responsibility. Give me wisdom to know how to address these issues in my own life, and to seek what is good for others. Always seek good.
Always seek good! Paul pushes for this in several other passages, including Philippians 2:3-4, and used You as the prime example of selfless living. May You be honored by my commitment to follow You and to labor in the harvest, meeting very real and practical needs in peoples’ lives (Matthew 9:36-38). May I serve You by taking my cues from You and from others who are following You with deep conviction and selflessness. Are our needs significant and pressing? Yes, (and here comes a word I try not to use…) but I can trust You to meet our needs as I follow You in Your pursuit of people whose needs are more pressing than my own. O Lord, to always seek for that which is good for others, and not get preoccupied and distracted with my own problems. Amen.
Please pray with us this week:
As part of the transition that has taken place at our U.S. headquarters in Colorado the past few months, The Navs have set up a daily prayer website for the month of November at http://blog.navigators.gospelcom.net/ . Please take a moment one day this week to go to our website and pray with us for the request for that day. Thanks.
